INJURY/ILLNESS RATE FORMULA REPORT

One of the main reasons for requiring OSHA Log records is to develop injury and illness incidence rates for different industries. Calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the incidence rate represents the number of full-time employees (out of every 100) suffering a recordable injury or illness during a given calendar year. It is intended to estimate the percentage of employees suffering from an injury or illness (it is not an exact percentage, as one employee may have more than a single recordable injury in any year).

The BLS surveys employer records from various industries across the United States annually to compute incidence rates. The rate is calculated by multiplying the estimated number of recordable injuries and illnesses contracted in an industry during the year by 200,000 and dividing that product by the total number of work-hours that the BLS estimates were actually worked by employees in that industry. The "200,000" used in this calculation is the equivalent number of work-hours for 100 employees working 40 hours per week for 50 weeks.

The CompWatch Injury/Illness Rate Formulas report will compute your company's incident rate so that you can evaluate your own safety record by comparing it to the industry-wide rate as computed by the BLS. To obtain the most recent industry-wide rates, you should contact the BLS directly or visit the BLS web site for the incidence rates for your industry.
